The Mall at Short Hills

Throughout the first part of the century, locals enjoyed better shopping. Prudential Insurance Company of America purchased a large parcel of land in 1949, which is now The Mall at Short Hills and part of Canoe Brook Country Club. This was followed by an additional 50,000 square feet of expansion. In the early 1960s, a modest retail center was built to meet demand. Some stores in the outdoor mall were FAO Schwarz and Pottery Barn. In 1967, it became America’s biggest Bloomingdale. Interior design was included in the 243,000 square foot retail building. The company also has a Stouffer’s restaurant and a Young World store. More interesting reads.

Prudential Insurance began working with The Taubman Company, owner of The Mall at Short Hills, in 1974. Two years and $100 million later, they had 1,160,000 gross leasable square feet and three anchor businesses. New stores included Black Star and Frost, The Limited, and Gap. Abraham & Straus came in 1981.

Construction of a 100,000-square-foot Saks Fifth Avenue store started in 1993 and ended in November 1994. Abraham & Straus became Macy’s after Bloomingdale’s renovation. A 129,000-square-foot Neiman Marcus and a 172,000-square-foot Nordstrom were added in August 1995, as were other specialized shops, including Tiffany & Co.

American Dream Meadowlands’ more extensive shop prompted Saks Fifth Avenue not to extend its contract in 2016. Instead, Indigo Books, Crate & Barrel, and Industrious (a pet-friendly, co-working office space) will all make their US debut in the venue.
